Human-Centred Computing


Artificial and Human Intelligence research addresses the formal & cognitive foundations for human-centred computing, and the human-centred design, development, and usability of cognitive technologies aimed at human-in-the-loop assistance & empowerment in decision-making, planning, creative-technical problem-solving, and automation.

The research emphasises:  (i). ``In-the-wild'' ecologically valid naturalistic (embodied multimodal interaction) settings;  (ii). Bottom-up interdisciplinarity, e.g., combining methods in AI and cognitive psychology; and  (iii) . Design-thinking as a human-centred perspective for engineering (``usable'') cognitive technologies aiming to assist, empower, and augment human capability.

Research in Artificial and Human Intelligence aims to bring together a novel & unique combination of research methodologies, academics and communities encompassing artificial intelligence, cognitive science, neuroscience, psychology & human development, human-computer interaction, and design science. In addition to pursuing its core scientific agenda, this line of inquiry also creates a discussion point for the development of interdisciplinary research, projects, collaborations, and other international people-exchange initiatives addressing the confluence of Cognition, AI, Interaction, and Design.  Dribbble

The research addresses a range of everyday living and professional working situations requiring an interplay of commonsense, creative and specialist (visuospatial) human-scale intelligence / problem-solving ability. A particular research emphasis from cognitive and computational viewpoints is on the role of semantics & commonsense, integration of reasoning and learning, and visuospatial cognition.

Example application contexts of interest include autonomous vehicles, multimodal social interaction in robotics, creative design technologies, clinical diagnostic intervention tools. In focus are also AI / Cognitive Technologies for embodied design thinking and human-centred design synthesis / engineering from the viewpoints of diverse design domains (e.g., AI for architecture and built environment design, product design, (digital) visuoauditory narrative media design).
